Vegetarian diet linked to extreme tiredness?

Posted by admin on January 25, 2012 in Uncategorized with 11 Comments

I have been a vegetarian now for about 3 and a half years.
Just recently I have been feeling very tired and drained and I was wondering if my diet could be linked to this in anyway.

Thanks for the help.

Very likely, it has also been associated with brain shrinkage.

A recent study showed that children who ate meat developed more muscle mass and scored higher on mental testing than children who did not eat meat.

I have been vegetarian for about a year. It is probably just stress. Hopefully you will recover soon. Or maybe you are getting sick. Go to sleep.

To me, it sounds like a possible iron deficiency (anaemia). This is not, by any means, the exclusive domain of vegetarians – not by a long chalk. My ex-wife (non-vegetarian) had it and had to take iron tablets for a while as a result. The only people I’ve heard of with iron deficiency have all been female – so I suspect it’s more to do with menstrual blood-loss than with diet per se. Another possibility, going on the tiredness symptoms, is pernicious anaemia – vitamin B12 deficiency. The only way to know for sure is to go to the doctor and get a blood test done.

It could if you arent eating right. If you dont pay attention to you nutritional intake it can have bad effects on your body. I’ve been vegan for 6 years and I feel fine. But I have a cousin that went vegan, but she ended up only eating tater tots and iceberg lettuce. She became very anemic and sickly.
So try to evaluate your diet and see if you are missing anything.

More than likely, google anemia and vegetarianism and read about the connection between the two

its odd that you only suddenly got the problem now

Could be to do with iron

Just make sure you are getting a balanced diet with all the food groups.

I find Gilliajn mckeiths living food energy powder a really good pick me up for energy – used it when I was vegan and was great

Also you may want to ck how much coffee you are drinking – may sound odd – but I use to drink a lot of coffee – and found the energy ‘slumps’ between cuppas really tiring. All better once gave up caffeine though and far less tired overall – especially in the morning.

A juicer for juice like carrot, orange and giner is a good pick me up too. Prehaps providing the extra vit C you need to absorb the iron

If it was due to being vegetarian, the symptom would not take 3 and a half years to appear. It’s probably anemia, which can be caused by a deficiency in iron or vitamin b12 or other things, you should see a doctor if it doesn’t get better soon.

I doubt it is linked to being a vegetarian. Typically new vegetarians experience these symptoms b/c they don’t know how to get enough nutrients. But I doubt that is it after 3 1/2 years.

If its not going away then go to the doctor and get your blood tested for protein and iron just to see.

If you are eating a healthy vegetarian diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables it is probably not your diet that is the problem. I became a vegetarian about a year ago for health reasons and have more energy than before. Maybe you should see a doctor for some tests to rule out a medical condition.

Being female and a vegetarian, you should probably be taking an Iron supplement. Even if you are eating plenty of veggies with lots of iron, you could still be coming up short. I’m not sure if you are aware of this or not, but there are 2 types of iron, and the iron found in a vegetarian diet, is the type of iron that is harder for the body to absorb. Combine that fact, with the fact that you lose a lot of your iron stores monthly, you have to be sure you are getting enough. As an example: A full serving of spinach, 83g, only provides 4% of the RDA for iron, and vegetarian women are advised to take more than the RDA. Also, be aware that if you are a tea drinker, studies have found that drinking tea makes it even harder for the body to absorb iron. Now this is what helped me, ( I am a vegetarian too) because I went through a stretch where I too felt kind of run down. After reading the study, I gave up the tea, and switched to 1 can of Coca-cola, for my caffeine, and seem to have noticeable more energy, it definitely helped me. Anyway, I hope this helps. Here’s the link to the tea study.
