I noticed that I was constantly tired way before I noticed I was depressed. No matter how much I sleep, I’m constantly in a cloudy hazy state. My mom says I’m just lazy, but I’m depressed as well and I’m wondering if fatigue can be a result of depression?

Depression is no respecter of persons, it strikes young and old, male and female, rich or poor, well-known or unknown, believer or un-believer alike. Depression knows no boundaries. “Can a faithful growing believer get depressed?” In short Yes!! We have many examples from scripture that would prove otherwise. Job, Jonah, Elijah, Moses each experienced feelings of hopelessness and despair. Moses had had enough negative experiences in his life that for much of his life he portrayed many of the classic symptoms of depression: -loss of appetite -loss of sleep or energy -Loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities -Reduced ability to concentrate -Overcome with feelings of hopelessness or uselessness. (See Numbers 11:14-15 for an example.) God gives us a case study in clinical depression in I Kings 19 too. From this text we find that Elijah experienced many of the classic symptoms. * Fear – “Elijah was afraid and ran for his life….” 1 Kings 19:3 * Suicidal tendencies — “(Elijah) prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, LORD,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ 1 Kings 19:4 * Excessive tiredness — “Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep…” 1 Kings 19:5 slept for a couple of days… maybe longer * Feelings of rejection — “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are

I’ve been extremely busy lately, with work and other obligations. Typically I get between 5-6 hours of sleep a night and don’t have time during the day to nap. Yesterday before I even noticed it, I started crying, for no reason, and kept crying until I went home and slept for almost five hours. Was my “breakdown” a result of lack of sleep?

From the NIH: National Institute of Mental Health www.nlm.nih.gov It is important to keep taking your medicines, even if you feel better. Do not stop taking your medicines without talking to your doctor. You often need to stop antidepressants gradually. From University of Bristol Web Site www.chm.bris.ac.uk Low serotonin levels are believed to be the cause of many cases of mild to severe depression which can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, apathy, fear, feelings of worthlessness, insomnia and fatigue. The most concrete evidence for the connection between serotonin and depression is the decreased concentrations of serotonin metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissues of depressed people. If depression arises as a result of a serotonin deficiency then pharmaceutical agents that increase the amount of serotonin in the brain should be helpful in treating depressed patients. Anti-depressant medications increase serotonin levels at the synapse by blocking the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic cell. Anti-depressants are one of the most highly prescribed medications despite the serious side-effects they can cause. If depression is mild enough it can sometimes be managed without prescribed medications. The most effective way of raising serotonin levels is with vigorous exercise. Studies have shown that serotonin levels are increased with increased activity and the production of serotonin is increased for some days after the activity. This is the safest way
